Why is it that we feel the necessity to always be looking like we are doing something at work; typing, digging, driving, filling in paperwork, all good things, don’t get me wrong but sometimes in the hustle and bustle of work life I just need to have a little break, a little clarification, a little thinking time. Have you ever thought to yourself – “stop, if I could just have a minute to think this through I’d get it.” I need to put my head down on the desk and let those wondrous ideas flow through my brain, as I’m thinking I start sorting, “no not that one, no not that one, wait a minute that might work, hold on let me extend that thought.” – If you sneak a peek at me right now I’m making this goofy face and glassy eyed, it’s my resting thinking face (RTF), my brain is in gear. We are loath to sit around thinking, we don’t want to look like we are doing nothing, now I‘m not advocating sitting for hours staring blankly at the walls (but if you can why not?).
I often write on planes (not as often I must admit in our current situation) with no interruptions. I often am sitting there minding my own business listening to music drooling, I mean resting my eyelids and then bam – that problem I was thinking about has a solution. I whip out the trusty laptop and fire away. I often have to ring the office as we are taxing to the gate – I have an idea! I often see the excitement in their eyes as I drive off to the airport, they are already thinking “look out ideas are coming our way!” It doesn’t matter where you do your thinking, it’s about giving yourself permission to stop and think. Go on try it, you never know what ideas are lurking for a quiet moment to come flying out.
